Day 5 - New Zealand History and Social Customs06-Nov-2020

On November 6, 2020, Ms Tania Secker from Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, New Zealand conducted a session for the exchange participants on New Zealand History and Social Customs. This gave the girls an opportunity to learn some part of New Zealand’s history and the role of New Zealanders in World War II. They also learnt about ‘Kiwiana,’ which are certain items and icons from New Zealand's heritage, especially from around the middle of the 20th century, that are seen as representing iconic New Zealander elements. These quirky things that contribute to a sense of nationhood include both genuine cultural icons and kitsch. UWS students understood why the people of New Zealand are called Kiwis. Rangi Ruru girls shared their family customs with their newly formed buddies at Unison. It was an enriching and engaging session.
